Our first shorts selection is roughly themed around ‘films-about-film’ - but it’s less navel-gazing than that might sound, and manages to cover coming-of-age comedy, super 8 experiments, nostalgia, slapstick and Bolshevik cut-ups in about an hour and a quarter. Dmitry Povolotsky’s PAL/SECAM concerns a wistful Moscow teenager and his attempts to use a Bollywood VHS as a seduction tool. Olga - The Camera and the Man (dir: Diego Alva Peniche) is a portrait of an obsessive photographer, while Untitled Actress (dir: Rachael Marchant) has a Hitchcockian blonde being pursued by a shadowy presence, and in Fensterbilder Bert Gottschalk creates a city out of filmstrips and sprocket-holes.
