First Acts Futures: Creative Career Surgery

Starting life in 2012 as a late-night shorts strand on Channel 4, Random Acts has grown into a platform-straddling hive of creativity and new commissions. This all-day event is an opportunity for creatives aged 16-24 to pick up career tips and see a selection of recent work.

How to make it as a freelancer (and survive!) with Dan Haworth-Salter 11:00 – 12:00

Documentary storyteller Dan Haworth-Salter has been working as a freelancer for 15 years. During this workshop, he guide you through how to maintain crucial client relationships, offering advice on asking the right questions when you do get commissioned, and will help you navigate the all too common pitfalls encountered when working in a highly competitive industry.

How to get funding for your next creative project with Jemima Waltho 12:00 – 13:00

Award-winning creative producer and educator Jemima Waltho will run a practical session on funding. The focus will be on the various types of funding available for creatives, what the funders are looking for, tips on developing funding partnerships, and how to avoid the mistakes people often make when applying for financial support.

How to get your work distributed with Pip Piper 14:00 - 15:00

In the digital age there are more and more avenues to distribute your work and build audiences, but in order to do it effectively you need a strategy and some creative thinking. Award-winning indie filmmaker Pip Piper will share ideas on some of the ways in which he’s managed to distribute 5 feature length films over the last 6 years, on TV, DVD, and online across the globe.

Then at 15:00 there will be an opportunity to find out how you can apply to make your own Random Act.
