Love & Peace

Boasting an army of cute, sewer-dwelling animals and the catchiest title song ever, Love and Peace is also strangely moving.

Dir: Sion Sono Japan 2015, 117 mins Cert: PG*

Responsible for last year’s late-night Flatpack hit, hip hop musical Tokyo Tribe, Sion Sono shows no sign of growing up or slowing down. Credited for at least six movies last year, the most satisfying of the lot surprisingly turns out to be a family movie about a magic turtle. Bearing the influence of everything from Godzilla to Babe: Pig In The City (apparently one of Sono’s favourite movies), the film concerns a hopeless loser who flushes his only friend – said turtle – down the toilet, sparking a series of events that lead to unlikely stardom. Boasting an army of cute, sewer-dwelling animals and the catchiest title song ever, Love and Peace is also strangely moving.
