Mustang
Five sisters are spotted playing on the beach with male classmates, causing a minor scandal in their Black Sea village...
Dir: Deniz Gamze Ergüven France/Germany/Turkey 2015, 97 mins Cert: 15
Five sisters are spotted playing on the beach with male classmates, causing a minor scandal in their Black Sea village. A severe grounding ensues, their house becoming a ‘wife factory’ with barred windows and male contact off the menu until the girls are ready for marriage.
Partly based on childhood experience, Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut feature is a lyrical fable that pits adolescent sensuality against a patriarchal society which sees sex in everything. That makes it sound preachy, but thanks to its lightness of touch, its fantastic young cast and a pearl of a score by Warren Ellis, Mustang is a joy.
