Alienated characters populate these dreamlike stories. Embracing a wide spectrum of animation techniques – hand-drawn, puppets, 3D, body painting – they show us the world through the eyes of those who feel they don't fit in, strangers to the society they live in, perhaps to themselves. Xaver Xylophon's melancholic Roadtrip hit festivals all over the world last year, while NFTS' new talent Simon Cartwright was putting the last touches to his dark urban tale Manoman. Full of emerging artists presenting their first or second shorts, this competition programme also features the prominent German animator Jochen Kuhn (Immer Müder), whose long list of prizes speaks for itself.

Manoman Dir: Simon Cartwright (UK 2015 – 11 mins) When Glen attends primal scream class, he releases something from deep within that knows no limits.

Roadtrip Dir: Xaver Xylophon (Germany 2014 – 22 mins) Julius can't sleep. To empty his head he decides to go on a road trip, but somehow he can't manage to leave. A hand-drawn film about failure, insomnia, a red motorbike, pretty barmaids, the desolation of Berlin (even in summer) and waterproof socks.

Glove – European premiere Dir: Alexa Lim Haas, Bernardo Britto (USA 2016 – 6 mins) The true story of a glove that’s been floating in space since 1968.

Immer Müder Dir: Jochen Kuhn (Germany 2015 – 6 mins) Brief notes on tiredness.

Missing One Player – UK premiere Dir: Lei Lei (China 2015 – 4 mins) Three majong players wait for the last player to show up. They have no choice but to wait and sit silently in tears.

Ruben Leaves Dir: Frederic Siegel (Switzerland 2015 – 5 mins) On his way to work, Ruben is haunted by obsessive-compulsive thoughts: is the front door locked? Is the stove really turned off? As Ruben's creative mind is invaded by increasingly absurd scenarios, reality and imagination begin to merge.

Edmond Dir: Nina Gantz (UK 2015 – 9 mins) Edmond's impulse to love and be close to others is strong... maybe too strong. As he stands alone by a lake contemplating his options, he goes on a journey backwards through his life, and revisits all his defining moments in search of the origin of his desires.

Sunday Lunch Dir: Céline Devaux (France 2015 – 14 mins) Jean observes his family. They ask him questions, but don’t listen to the answers; they give him advice that they don’t follow. It’s Sunday lunch.
