A group of scientists have developed a new psychiatric tool called the DC Mini which enables doctors to tap into the dreams of their patients, and you'll never guess what - some bad guys have stolen it. A familiar sci-fi premise, but there is nothing predictable about this film.

We are in the hands of Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress), an expert at combining the outlandish with everyday observational detail.

Paprika's astonishing dream sequences - which seamlessly combine hand-drawn and digital imagery - have extra power because they are rooted in proper characters, and there's a lovely undercurrent of noir lyricism in Detective Konakawa's attempt to conquer his own childhood fears. Plus some sharp digs at Japanese consumerism and the way that movies and the web can infect our imaginations. We're very excited about this one.

Dir: Satoshi Kon (Japan 2006, 90 mins) Voices: Megumi Hayashibara, Toru Emori, Katsunosuke Hori, Toru Furuya
