It’s always a pleasure to show work by Scottish documentarian Duncan Cowles (in competition last year with Directed by Tweedie) and his new collaboration with animator Ross Hogg is a touching documentary about Ross’s grandmother which explores memory and identity. Operator, Caroline Bartlett’s minimalist yet suspenseful thriller won the BAFTA for British Short Film this year. And there’s more animation with The Interpreter (by one of our jury members Noriko Okako), and Unhappy Happy, by West Midlands prodigy Peter Millard.

Mr Madila Dir: Rory Waudby-Tolley (UK 2015 – 8 mins) Mr Madila or The Colour of Nothing documents a series of conversations between the filmmaker and a gifted spiritual healer, exploring the inner mind, the fabric of the universe, and the nature of reality itself, through the sacred art of animation.

Operator Dir: Caroline Bartleet (UK 2015 – 6 mins) Gemma wakes to find her house on fire. Trapped with her son, she dials 999. The operator who answers holds Gemma's life in her hands.

The Interpreter Dir: Noriko Okaku (UK 2015 – 6 mins) The Interpreter is based on 22 Derbyshire Tarot cards, which were created by Okaku during a residency in Derby. Each card represents the artist's own interpretation of the county's history, myths and legends.

Isabella Dir: Duncan Cowles & Ross Hogg (UK 2015 – 9 mins) At the age of ninety-one, Isabella struggles to remember... As she becomes ever fragile and her short-term memory begins to falter, her past is explored, questioned and brought to life.

Loop Dir: Sam Moore (UK 2016 – 6 mins) Loop is about what can be seen and what cannot, how scientists imagine their work and how they describe it. This short animated film is based on the work done in Dr Serge Mostowy's lab on septin assembly in cells.

Unhappy Happy Dir: Peter Millard (UK 2015 – 7 mins) I get up and have breakfast. Don't get old. I'm so Unhappy Happy.

From Nursery to Misery Dir: Matthew Reed (UK 2015 – 15 mins) Gina and Tina are identical twins and musicians who live together in the woods. Now in their forties, the film explores the unlikely story of their teenage band 'From Nursery To Misery' and the eccentric life they share together.
