The Very Private Life of M. Sim + Q&A

Wednesday 5th April, 2017

The Electric Cinema Screen 2 | 18:00 - 20:30

Jonathan Coe talks to us about a life shaped by film; first as a viewer in 70s Bromsgrove, and later as a writer and adaptee.

Monsieur Sim is a man so dull he can talk a fellow air passenger to death. After landing a job selling ecological toothbrushes he takes to the road, becoming increasingly estranged from reality and obsessed by tragic yachtsman Donald Crowhurst. This picaresque comedy transplants Jonathan Coe’s novel from Britain to France, apart from that staying remarkably faithful to the book’s bittersweet tone with Jean-Pierre Bacri pitch-perfect in the title role.

Also popping up in a cameo is Jonathan Coe himself, and we’re delighted that he can join us tonight to talk about a life shaped by film; first as a viewer in 70s Bromsgrove, and later as a writer and adaptee.

Presented in association with Swish Films.
