UPA Cartoons

Sunday 30th March, 2014

The Electric Cinema Screen 2 | 12:00

Some of UPA's finest moments have now been digitally restored, and this is the first chance to see them in the UK.

!geraldmcboingboing The husband-and-wife team of John and Faith Hubley, who brought a humanistic perspective and a distinctly modern style to postwar American animation, will be honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Pictured: ROOTY TOOT TOOT, 1951.

With sinuous lines, bold colours and jazzy editing, UPA made a real splash when it arrived on the animation scene in the 1940s. Avoiding the talking animals and cartoon violence of their rivals, these short films showed a refreshing wit and sophistication, and established a ‘cartoon modern’ style that is still influential today. Some of the studio’s finest moments have now been digitally restored, and this is the first chance to see them in the UK. Along with familiar faces, including the myopic Mr Magoo and the sonically inventive Gerald McBoingBoing, you’ll find more obscure delights: the sassy courtroom show-down of Rooty Toot Toot; James Thurber fable The Unicorn in the Garden; and The Telltale Heart, a splendid Poe adaptation narrated by James Mason. Please note this screening has been rescheduled to Sunday 30th March at midday
