Man with a Movie Camera + Live Score

This promises to be a really special evening, and sits right at the top of our ‘do not miss’ list.

1929’s Man with a Movie Camera was directed by Dziga Vertov, with his brother Mikhail Kaufman (director of In Spring, our Opening Night event) getting the cinematographer credit.

The film is revered for its technical achievement and innovative editing, earning it the accolade of the 9th best film of all time, according to a Sight and Sound poll. The film itself is almost narrative-free and instead focuses on modern life in the Soviet Union.

Fellow Ukrainian country-people and composers Roksana Smirnova and Misha Kalinin make their second foray into Flatpack (see, In Spring again for the first), this time alongside Brum’s own DIY exploratory muso, Sarah Farmer. In a residency-esque venture with support from the British Council, the trio will be spending the whole week together working on an original live score for the silent film.
