Palace of the Winds

Amazing footage of musicians from across Western Sahara, courtesy of Sublime Frequencies.

Following on from last year's showing of Sumatran Folk Cinema, here's the latest DVD from the open-eared Sublime Frequencies label. Amazing footage of musicians from across Western Sahara – including Group Doueh, visitors to the UK on the recent SF tour – has been pieced together into a dream-like desert travelogue. A shaky VHS document of qawaali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's first gig outside Asia, at the Luxor, Balsall Heath in 1980.

Free entry.

Dir: Hisham Mayet USA 2009, 52 minutes With: Group Doueh, Group Marwani, Sadoum Oueld Aida
