Summer (Leto)

Friday 3rd May, 2019

The Electric Cinema Screen 2 | 20:30 - 22:40

Summer is Kirill Serebrennikov’s ode to youth, change, and the underground rock scene of pre-perestroika Leningrad.

This stylised, partly fictionalised biopic documents the emergence of Viktor Tsoi (frontman of 80s rock group Kino), as well as the love triangle budding between him, mentor Mike Naumenko and his girlfriend Natasha.

The three of them attempt to navigate romantic complexity while also finding ingenious ways to work around Soviet censorship, to a soundtrack which features staples like Bowie, T Rex and Iggy Pop as well as homegrown post-punk.

A wry, wistful reverie of skinny-dipping, camaraderie and rock and roll.
