Optical Soundwaves: Meet the Participants

Thursday 12th February, 2026 Posted by Sam Groves

Following our city-wide open call we've welcomed thirteen Birmingham-based composers onto our Optical Soundwaves artist development programme.

What is Optical Soundwaves?

Supported by Birmingham City Council with funds from UKSPF, Optical Soundwaves is a short-term programme with big dreams. Over the next couple of months we'll be attending workshops, screenings and performances that provide valuable insight into the art of live audiovisual performance and live scoring. More than a development programme, Optical Soundwaves is an AV lab where composers can share thoughts, test out ideas and engage in creative experimentation.

Optical Soundwaves is an offshoot of Optical Sound - the programming umbrella that brings together all things sound and moving image - cinema for the ear, if you will. We're working to help build and support an ecosystem in the region where animators, musicians, and filmmakers can come together to experiment, collaborate and create. And Optical Soundwaves is just the beginning.
