You can’t move without tripping over a film crew in Birmingham these days, whether it’s zombie dystopia The Girl With All the Gifts or 70s spy thriller The Game. Even Spielberg is shooting his latest across the city, and it’s easy to see the attraction: Victorian grandeur and 60s brutalism; leafy suburbia and post-industrial grit; Birmingham has it all. It hasn’t always been a mecca for filmmakers, but take a delve through the archives and you can trace the story of a city that is continually reinventing itself.
That’s exactly what we’ve done with Birmingham on Film, a season of special screenings and events that will take you on a whistle-stop time-machine tour from 1902 right up to the present day. Presented in association with a host of brilliant partners, and supported by the BFI as part of their Britain on Film initiative, the programme runs from 16 September to 15 October across the city.
