Film for all the senses

A Time to Rebel

Saturday 21st May, 2022

Flatpack Hub | 14:00 - 17:00

Film, music, chats and chai!

We’re turning back the clock with a screening of Gurinder Chadha’s debut documentary I’m British But…, in which Chadha explores the complexity of identity in the South Asian diaspora. This will be followed by a swift jump forward to the present with BANGLATOWN!, Farihah Chowdhury’s short documentary on the Bengali heritage of London’s Brick Lane.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Juwairiyyah Wali, Farihah Chowdhury, and Roo Kaur Dhissou about generational shifts, cyclical patterns and activism, all whilst celebrating South Asian women behind the movie camera.

Ending on a high, we’ll be throwing it back to the South Asian underground rave scene and reimagining the iconic daytimer events of the 80s and 90s with DJ Rizmi and experimental visuals created by Birmingham based artist Faisal Hussain.

This event has been curated by Juwairiyyah Wali, and was selected from Flatpack’s second open call for curators from underrepresented groups. See here for more information about the open call.

EVENT TIMES:
14:00 - 14:45: Introduction and films
14:45 - 15:30: Discussion
15:30 - 17:00: DJ/Daytimer
