Film Camp

Thursday 18th May, 2023

MAC | 11:00 - 17:00

We launched Film Camp back in 2017 - an annual one-day training event exploring some of the latest innovations in cinema exhibition. Since then we’ve heard from inspiring speakers, watched some great films and met some brilliant people.

Film Camp returns to Birmingham for 2023 with another great line up! We’re excited to welcome exhibitors from across the Midlands to share their wealth of experience as well as discuss new models and ways of thinking. The day is open to anyone interested in showing films - from large-scale exhibitors to community cinema organisers and student film groups.

Activities this year will include:

Demystifying VR with East City Films Dan Tucker, a producer and curator of touring immersive exhibitions, explains the potential, affordances and practicalities of 'XR content' in relation to exhibition and showcase in public art spaces, cinemas, festivals and venues. Dan will demystify the terminology around immersive, XR and virtual reality and highlight the exciting opportunity for both immersive creators and exhibitors who may never have shown projects like this before.

Spotlight on ‘In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats’ Darren Emerson takes the audience on a journey into the world of 'In Pursuit Of Repetitive Beats', a major touring immersive exhibition originally funded by the BFI’s Film Fund that has successfully toured to London, Liverpool, Coventry, Cardiff, Amsterdam and Austin Texas.

Building Your Cinematic Universe with Cinema For All Whether it’s transforming your venue, providing a big screen experience, or creatively marketing your events, you are building a cinematic universe for your audience to enjoy. Join Cinema For All in this training session to help develop your confidence and knowledge in:

  • getting the best out of your screening equipment and venue
  • sourcing films and understanding formats
  • raising your profile so your community cinema can shine bright. This session will also feature exciting case studies from other screening groups across the country to get you inspired!

Access All Areas with Charlie Little Charlie Little, Matchbox Cine’s Access Consultant, will host an interactive session focused on holistic approaches to embedding inclusive and accessible practices within film exhibition, exploring access for cinema spaces, and how access moves beyond physical elements into marketing and outreach. This session will explore meaningful and impactful audience development and the standardisation of high-quality, reliable access provision.

Networking Play Space Back by popular demand is the Play Space, the networking event where exhibitors can chat and make connections whilst also taking part in a VR experience, having a go at stop motion animation and winning a prize at the tombola!

Presented by Film Hub Midlands, part of BFI’s Film Audience Network.

Ticket price includes lunch, refreshments and networking drinks.
