In Spring + Live Score

We’re opening this year’s Flatpack Festival at the beautiful Moseley Road Baths with a screening of In Spring (Mikhail Kaufman), a city symphony devoted to Kyiv.

An experimental documentary that was reportedly lost until 2005, this 1929 Soviet Ukrainian production not only observes the progress of life but draws the audience in from being an observer to an active participant. Accomplished Ukrainian composer and pianist Roksana Smirnova takes to the stage with long-term collaborator and countryman Misha Kalinin to provide a powerful live score which, of course, is now layered with an even more urgent sense of poignancy and pride.

While in Birmingham, Misha and Roksana will work with Birmingham-based mixed media artist and musician Sarah Farmer on a brand new live score for pioneer filmmaker and Kaufman’s brother Dziga Vertov’s landmark silent film Man with a Movie Camera. This performance will bring the festival to a close on Sunday 21st May at CBSO Centre.

Before the screening there will be tours of the building led by the Friends of Moseley Road Baths. You’ll get to explore behind-the-scenes, hear stories and memories from the past and learn about exciting plans for the future.
