Medusa Deluxe + Q&A
Sometimes, a synopsis comes along that has you hooked straight from the off.
‘Murder at a hair-dressing competition’ might sound like the title of a rejected B-side by The Smiths but is actually the debut film from director and screenwriter Thomas Hardiman.
In this ambitious and alluring comedy thriller (which through editing wizardry appears as one, continuous take), the unfolding chaos sees the participants and models become increasingly paranoid and finger-pointy over who has committed murder. Think Sam Mendes’ 1917 but with less bullets and more bouffants.
This is not simply a short back and sides though. The narrative slowly unfurls through a crumbled chronology, to reveal the underlying layers of a seemingly glamorous world. Layers. That’s another hairdressing pun, people.
