Screendance Shorts

Sunday 21st May, 2023

The Mockingbird Cinema - Screen 2 | 15:10 - 16:15

A regular fixture in the festival programme is a roundup of the very best in screendance - the art of dance on film.

This year's selection focuses on telling stories through movement and is co-curated with resident screendance curator Sima Gonsai. Featuring a Spike Jonze penned short about a rogue group of dancers who find themselves in a museum after dark - with all sorts of glorious Jonzeian touches, brought to life with the help of Ballet national de Marseille, it's an absolute gem of a film. Based on the legend of Sisyphus, Yurodivy explores contemporary humankind's relentless pursuit for wealth and happiness, as dancers battle up a sand dune, and the documentary The Shimmering Extraordinary charts six different dancers' journeys and practice, giving voice to their stories, highlighting how dance and movement has become their way of expressing and communicating themselves.
