In December 1970, a protest broke out in Poland, following the government's decision to increase prices just before Christmas. Authorities repressed the upheaval with violent methods, leading to hundreds of civilians being wounded.
Tomasz Wolski recreates this dark episode of Poland's history, juxtaposing video archives (showing civilians in the streets) and stop motion sequences (with politicians represented by lifelike puppets). Through astounding phone conversation recordings, we follow the situation from the oppressors' perspective, as it slowly spirals out of control.
1970 skillfully dissects the mechanisms of power, and offers a unique point of view on a tragic event that resonates universally.
Presented in partnership with Centrala.
