A sumptuous fantasy classic, screening at one of Birmingham’s most distinctive and beautiful churches.

Airman David Niven is shot down over the English channel. Thanks to thick fog he eludes the Conductor (Marius Goring) who is supposed to chaperone him to the afterlife, and finds himself caught between two worlds - Technicolor England and monochrome heaven, linked by a magical moving staircase. A passionate love story and a witty riff on international relations, A Matter of Life and Death is full of the visual fun and games that make Powell and Pressburger’s films so fresh and enjoyable to this day.

The venue for this event is St Lazar’s Hall, adjacent to ‘Lazarica’ - the Serbian Orthodox church built in Bournville in the late 1960s on land donated by the Cadbury family. The walls and ceiling of the church are covered with al-secco paintings by the late Serbian artist Dušan Mihajlović, and all ticket holders will have the opportunity to look around the building before the film (between 6:30 - 7:30pm). Please note: the church hall is wheelchair accessible but the church itself is only accessible by steps.
