Mia Hansen-Løve’s enchanting new film about love, cinema, and Ingmar Bergman sways gently between fantasy and realism.

Filmmaking couple Tony (Tim Roth) and Chris (Vicky Krieps) have travelled to Fårö, the island that was once muse and home to Ingmar Bergman, for a writing retreat. Tony works effortlessly on his latest screenplay, while Chris, intimidated by the weight of Bergman’s presence, suffers writer's block. Reflecting on her own relationship, her new idea for a screenplay – about a young American filmmaker who attends a wedding on Fårö to rekindle a lost love – takes over and by its end, Bergman Island melts into full on metanarrative with wondrous results.
