Dir: Various (Approx. 75 mins)
Short films can be easy to overlook when sat next to all those big sexy features, but in many ways this is where you find the dark, throbbing heart of the festival. Channel One is devoted to the snatched moment, the tricky-to-pin-down, from ‘old-school’ experimental filmmaking to a new generation playing with the full potential of online film. In the first camp you might place San Francisco-based Vanessa Woods, who shoots beautiful 16mm monochrome and then animates over it frame by frame. In the ‘web’ corner, meet Austrian artist Oliver Laric, whose balloon alphabet, clipart animation and Bollywood dancing we could watch all day. (And did – that’s why the brochure was late.) There’s also a chance to see the more sensitive side of Nottingham’s finest Simon Ellis, whose ‘A Storm and Some Snow’ (pictured) features music by Max Richter. www.vanessawoods.com www.oliverlaric.com www.bubtowers.com
Other additions - a lovely little changeover-circle piece by Dave Griffiths, and the very first UK screening of 'Clandestine', an operatic noir number from Luton filmmakers / filmfest honchoes Zero Balance.
