There’s a whole lot of discourse about looking inside ourselves these days, but it tends to be focused on a spiritual rather than a physical journey.
Not so with Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, the pair behind Leviathan and Caniba, as they stake out five Parisian hospitals, really getting inside their patients.
Not since Dennis Quaid in Innerspace has it been so thoroughly enthralling to take a tour through the human body, with micro-cameras exploring near-psychedelic, labyrinthine landscapes deep within us. There’s something disorienting about being immersed in the claustrophobic sights and stifled sounds of the human body, when we should really feel more at home than ever. This is no doubt one documentary which will stay with you long after you’ve left the screening. It’s also not one for the faint hearted.
