Canada/UK 1999, 116 mins

Disconcerting drama based on William Trevor's short story, shot in the Birmingham suburbs.

Feat. Bob Hoskins; Arsinée Khanjian; Elaine Cassidy

On the heels of his success with The Sweet Hereafter, Atom Egoyan took the unexpected step of shifting from Canada to Birmingham for an adaptation of William Trevor’s novel. Felicia (Cassidy) is a young Irish girl who is kicked out her by family when they discover she is pregnant by a soldier from the British army. She travels to England to find him, and ends up being taken under the wing of a fastidious middle-aged caterer named Hilditch (Hoskins). Lyrical drama swiftly turns into strange Hitchcockian suspenser, the Irish landscape contrasted with the gasometers of Birmingham. There’s even a cameo appearance for the Electric up the road, in the guise of a porn cinema. This film has been chosen for Open Season by Nicky Getgood, who runs the regular Filum Night gatherings as well as the Digbeth is Good blog.
