Q&A

Last summer a city-wide road safety emergency was announced by Birmingham's authorities, in response to the number of deaths and injuries caused by dangerous driving on our roads.

Sarah Chaundler's new documentary (25 mins) offers an insight into some of the personal stories behind the headlines and statistics. Exploring the roots of our motor culture in Manzoni's post-war redevelopment, City of Cars then captures the mounting resistance to road crime on our streets today. The film will be preceded by a specially filmed introduction by Chris Boardman, Olympic gold medallist and now Active Travel Commissioner for England.

The emergency announcement included a commitment to Vision Zero - a road network where no one is killed or seriously injured. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion exploring how we can go about achieving this as a city. The conversation will be chaired by Jane Haynes (Politics and People Editor at Birmingham Mail & Post), and panelists will include Mat Macdonald (Road Safety Commissioner for the West Midlands), Simon Foster (West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner), Lucy Harrison (RoadPeace) and Rebecca Hawthorn (Transport Planning Manager, Birmingham City Council).
