On a Tuesday night in January 1976, 9 million BBC1 viewers were treated to the spectacle of a repressed council employee having a meltdown on a camping trip.

Mike Leigh’s second film in the Play for Today slot had a huge audience response, and fifty years on its acutely observed social comedy still hits the spot. To celebrate half a century of Nuts in May, it is our delight to welcome Keith (Roger Sloman) and Candice-Marie (Alison Steadman) for this very special event.

Leigh had first road-tested his unique approach to building characters here at the MAC theatre in the mid-60s, and much of his early TV work was made up the road at Pebble Mill’s pioneering drama department. Developed over the course of nine weeks on location, Nuts in May transplants a Croydon couple from an earlier stage play to a campsite on the south coast, and sets them on a collision course with a Brummie biker couple (‘look at them bleedin’ bluebells’). After the screening Roger and Alison will reflect on their Dorset adventures and take questions from the audience.

This event is part of Flatpack's monthly residency at The Mockingbird and Midlands Arts Centre. Expect all manner of films – previews, rediscovered gems, and under-the-radar curiosities you won't find anywhere else.
