Funeral Parade of Roses

Toshio Matsumoto’s debut feature uses Oedipus Rex as the thread for a delirious journey through the Tokyo underground, depicting the city’s queer and transvestite scene with a candour which was breathtaking at the time.

Throw in sleazy gangsters, avant-garde stoners and anti-US protesters, and it’s clear that Japan too was infected with the late 60s bug: as drag queen anti-hero Eddy puts it, “I wish the whole country would sink under water.” This gorgeous new 4K restoration of the film will be preceded by a short introduction from Jose Arroyo (Warwick University).
