Handsworth Compost Village
Handsworth Compost Village
Saturday 9th May, 2026
See Venues & Access information here.
It may not seem like it if you’re in slow-moving traffic on the Soho Road, but Handsworth is one of the greenest bits of Brum.
This afternoon of free activities is an opportunity to explore some of the nature on your doorstep, and to celebrate the launch of the 'Handsworth Compost Village'.
There are three participating venues:
Crick Community Gardens
Crick Lane, Handsworth B20 2RJ
Once a dumping ground, people power has transformed Crick into a green oasis and a vital community resource. Join us for a hands-on nature animation workshop, and there will also be a 'How to Compost exhibition', mud kitchen and food (donations).
Victoria Jubilee Allotments
Victoriana Way, Handsworth B20 2SW
The first new allotment to be created in Birmingham for decades, VJA opened in 2010 after a long campaign to secure Section 106 funds from a housing developer. You can get a taste of the allotment today, visit the Compost Culture plot (showcasing different composting methods) and chat to plot-holders - including photographer Vanley Burke, who develops new work here as well as growing veg.
Handsworth Park Community Garden
Handsworth Park, Holly Road, Handsworth B20 2BY
In 2017 the Friends of Handsworth Park raised the money to turn an unused corner of the park into a sensory garden with vegetable patches and wildflowers. Along with a chance to explore the garden there will be a free printing workshop throughout the afternoon.
Presented in partnership with the city-wide Compost Culture project. See also B21 installation at Sons of Rest, Handsworth Park.
