LOCAL SUPERSTAR: Seema Mattu

‘LOCAL SUPERSTAR’ is a multi-stranded constellation of sculpture, live-action film, digital animation and congregative music. Set in an ambitious installation in Eastside Projects’ main gallery, seven films follow the formation of Saheli – a sonic collective of five South Asian, queer women whose focus on sonic joy, musicality and collectivity stems from artist Seema Mattu’s experience of musical congregation as seva (selfless service).

Join Saheli as they kickstart their journey towards becoming a sonic entity from audition tapes through to sonic jams, interviews and live rehearsals. Each character brings their own experience, skills, questions and curiosities to an evolving sonic landscape, shifting between real-world and digitally animated realms as narratives and relationships grow through conversation and musicmaking.

The exhibition at Eastside Projects is the first stages of a national tour which will travel to FACT in Liverpool and Focal Point Gallery in Southend, evolving across each venue as the band continues to form and expand.
