No Dogs or Italians Allowed

Alain Ughetto’s second feature film lovingly retells the story of his labourer grandfather and their migration from Italy to France. Intricately crafted stop-motion animation follows the family as they endure the hardships of the 20th century including war and an epidemic, but never without losing their sense of humour in what is a fond and affectionate ode.

The film is narrated by Ughetto himself, his hands often appearing in shot and drawing the audience closer into the family. Sugar cubes pass for building blocks and broccoli florets as foliage, whilst the characters advise “don’t play with your food”. Wink, wink. As for the “No Dogs or Italians Allowed” sign? It’s so the dogs don’t bite the Italians, says the grandfather. Our heart? It’s full.
