Unfortunately this event has been cancelled due to unforeseen production issues, which mean the film will not be finished in time for the screening at Flatpack. We're really disappointed to have to cancel, and pass along sincere apologies from Opera North for the cancellation.

Showered with five star reviews, Opera North's collaboration with South Asian Arts radically reinvented one of the earliest known operas, and in turn produced one for the ages.

Monteverdi’s 1607 work L’Orfeo, or Orpheus, is based on the ancient Greek tragedy. The grief-stricken Orpheus sets off into the underworld to try and bring back his new, but recently deceased, bride Eurydice and is a great reminder to keep looking forwards, not back.

But where this reimagining differs is the fusing of Indian and Western classical music, with the opera being performed in a range of languages including Urdu and Italian. Composer Jasdeep Singh Degun and early music expert Laurence Cummings have supervised the rescoring of certain sections of the opera too, using both Indian classical instruments and western baroque.

We’ll be screening the opera ‘NT Live’ style during this year’s festival. The real tragedy would be to miss it.
