Patema is a teenage girl who lives as part of an underground community, confined there thanks to a switch in gravity which would send them flying off into the sky if they went above ground. When she ventures into the ‘danger zone’ and encounters Age, a boy subject to opposite forces, an unlikely bond is forged. Yasuhiro Yoshiura uses this bizarre scenario for comedy, but also to play with perspective and create a sense of topsy-turvy weightlessness. The result is a charmingly skewed anime that has already picked up a number of festival awards.
