Science Of Sleep
Science Of Sleep
Sunday 4th February, 2007
Dir: Michel Gondry France 2005, 105 mins
With: Gael García Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alain Chabat, Miou-Miou
Moving onto feature no.4 with the success of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind under his belt, Michel Gondry had every right to consider himself a ‘proper’ filmmaker. Thankfully he refused to put away childish things. Science of Sleep taps into the rampant handmade gadgetry and surrealism of his music videos, while at the same time giving us the most personal (and painful) insight yet into Gondry’s world. We are on similar lovelorn territory to Eternal Sunshine, with Stéphane (Bernal) obsessing over Stéphanie (Gainsbourg), the girl across the hall. However, the smaller budget has given the director much freer rein with his imagination, and Stéphane’s nightly, part-animated dream TV shows become a vehicle for the most wondrous ideas, images and tangents. Proper cinema.
Showing with Everything Will Be OK (dir: Don Hertzfeldt) Clammy-palmed and hearts a-flutter, we have great pleasure in presenting the first UK screening of Don Hertzfeldt's latest film. Everything Will Be OK mixes his customary stickmen with live-action footage to stunning effect. www.bitterfilms.com
