UNFORTUNATELY THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Documenting the arrival and settlement of Commonwealth communities in to the city, the exhibition tells the story of how Birmingham became the centre of the British Empire to the diverse city it is today.

Directed by influential filmmaker Philip Donnellan,* The Colony* was described by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham as "a wasted hour" when it first aired on the BBC. It is now regarded as one of the most honest and poetic films about the experiences of first-generation migrants, gathering a host of interviews with people newly arrived in the city from the Caribbean.

The film will be followed by a discussion chaired by arts curator Ian Sergeant, who will be in conversation with the co-curators of the exhibition Rita McLean and Ian Grosvenor, and Garry Stewart, Director of Recognize Black Culture and Heritage, exploring the themes of the film and exhibition.

Before the documentary screening, there is an opportunity to view the exhibition and talk to the co-curators from 6pm. Details at sampad.org.uk
