The Soil + Come Back, Africa

This film and music event welcomes South African acapella singing group The Soil who are in Birmingham for the Afrovibes Festival. They will be bringing their laid-back fusion of hip-hop, soul, jazz and afropop to this special event.

Following The Soil’s short performance we’ll be screening Come Back, Africa (Lionel Rogosin, 1960, 85 mins). This recently restored portrait of a township, made undercover in Johannesburg by director Lionel Rogosin, was co-written by two local journalists and was one of the first candid glimpses of South Africa under apartheid. The filmmakers pretended to be making a commercial musical while shooting, and the results include a legendary shebeen sequence featuring singer Miriam Makeba.

See also: Unogumbe. Solomon and Marion is a powerful two-hander starring Janet Suzman and Khayalethu Anthony, set in the run-up to the South African World Cup in 2010. It runs at the REP from 16 October to 1 November.
