Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

Delving beneath the headlines and stereotypes, this archive collage takes you on a journey from Harlem to Oakland to offer a vivid snapshot of the Black Power movement at its apex.

Leading figures including Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis and Huey P Newton are captured on film by a group of Swedish filmmakers whose footage wouldn’t come to light for another thirty years. The film is threaded together with audio reflections from the likes of Questlove, Erykah Badu and Davis herself reflecting back on that turbulent period.

To set the scene, Kehinde Andrews (Birmingham City University) will give a short talk drawing on his new book Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century, published this summer by Zed Books.

This screening is presented in partnership with Flatpack as part of the UK-wide Uprising: Spirit of 68 season, and is supported by the National Lottery through the UK Film Audience Network.
