Wonderland: Movie Masala

During the 1970s there were seven cinemas specialising in Indian and Pakistani film within a few blocks of each other in Balsall Heath and Sparkbrook. As well as thriving businesses these venues played a crucial community role, but by the 1980s many of them had been closed down by the home entertainment boom.

Although it's no longer showing movies, one of the finest still standing is the Piccadilly (aka Dreamland) on Stratford Road, and today the Wonderland kiosk will be popping up with a selection of classic film clips and images of these lost picturehouses. There will also be free refreshments and a chance to look round the building itself.
