Only the River Flows
Based on the best-selling short story by Yu Hua (considered one of China’s greatest living authors), this neo-noir is as vintage as they come.
Following police chief Ma Zhe as he investigates a series of riverside murders in 1990s rural China, the film brings up themes of shame and secrecy for a man to whom obedience and social norms are of paramount importance. After quickly solving the crime to the standard of his superiors, Ma Zhe delves deeper into the behaviour of the local townsfolk, and uncovers more than he bargained for.
