The Taste of Mango + Simon Says/Dadda

Saturday 18th May, 2024

The Mockingbird Cinema - Screen 1 | 12:00 - 13:40

"A delicate family portrait about unconditional love, resolve and hope…Lyrical and heartbreaking." - Screen Anarchy

The Taste of Mango is Sri Lankan British artist and filmmaker Chloe Abrahams’s first film, and what a debut. She tenderly guides us through the complex familial relationships between three generations of women (her mother, Rozana; her grandmother Jean; and Chloe herself), and how the love between them can endure through the pain of revealing long-kept secrets.

Shot on a small HD camera with an intimate, home movie feel, it’s easy to see why Abrahams won the award for Best Debut Director in the Feature Documentary category at the British Independent Film Awards.

We also welcome Beverley Bennett, who will present the first single-channel UK screening of her moving image piece Simon Says - first presented at Grand Union as a three-screen installation during last year’s Flatpack. Like Abrahams Bennett has drawn on her own family experiences with this project, focussing in particular on father-daughter relationships.
