Directed by Franc Roddam, Dummy is a 1977 documentary drama based on the true story of Sandra, a Deaf woman growing up in 1950s Bradford in near poverty.

Starring a young Geraldine James in the lead role, this film (originally made for television) serves as a gritty depiction of working class life in Britain and an education in the harsh realities of many d/Deaf children around the country, showing Sandra being forced to lip read and speak - and being systematically punished if she uses sign language.

We are excited to present this film for the very first time with audio description and creative captioning. With thanks to Elaine Lillian Joseph from Audio Description collective, SoundScribe.
