With help from the Dovzhenko Centre in Kyiv we’ve been delving into their incredible Ukrainian animation archives in recent months.

Alongside this we’ve been working remotely with Ukrainian experimental band Potreba Group to put together a short film/live score programme unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Potreba Group will be bringing their musical stylings of improvisational nu-jazz and electronics to four short films spanning the 1960s to the early 2000s. These include a cut-out political satire from 1969 (Mars XX), a gothic animated adaptation of Gogol's work (A Terrible Vengeance - 1988), a magical cut-out adventure exploring the origin of the Milky Way (The Chumak’s Way - 1980), and a whimsical abstract piece titled The Compromix from 2002.

Protreba means “need” in Ukrainian. According to Boychenko, “the need to develop the music I started with, the very first musical language I met. The ‘need’ is for self-expression through intense and noisy sounds."

Supported by the UK/UA Creative Partnerships, created by the British Council and the Ukrainian Institute as a follow-up to the UK/Ukraine Season of Culture
