We’re delighted to welcome James Lawrence Slattery and Sean Burns to Flatpack for an evening of clips and conversation to mark Routledge’s publication of Taking Back Desire: A Psychoanalytic Approach to Queerness and Neoliberalism on Screen.

Drawing on Slattery’s PhD thesis, the book examines a range of film, television and video art texts including Paris Is Burning, Pose, Sharp Objects, *120 BPM *and the work of Ryan Trecartin, with the aim of restoring a sense of queer as resistance to neoliberal forms of inclusion.

James Lawrence Slattery completed their PhD in English and American Studies from the University of Manchester in 2023, and teaches film at the University of the West of England.

Sean Burns is an artist, writer and associate editor of frieze. He is the director of the film Dorothy Towers and the co-founder of Queer Street Press, an independent publishing imprint.
