A co-commission with the brilliant Hippfest in Bo’ness, Scotland, The Dark Mirror is a beautiful and thoughtful film with live score exploring canals and waterways.
Using purely archival footage (from the BFI National Archive, Media Archive Central England, Collection Eye Filmmuseum Netherlands, Yorkshire Film Archive and the National Library of Scotland’s Moving Image Archive), artist Moira Salt has created a dreamy, visual poem which delves into the untold stories of those who built and used the canals, exploring the displacement of people and geographies caused by their construction and the eco-human relationships shaped by the waterways.
Performing the score they’ve been working on for the last few months, Scottish musicians and composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman (Clay Pipe Music) have produced an exquisite soundtrack - think ambient echoes, folktronica ripples and field recordings that will take you on a boat ride along the currents of your imagination.
The Dark Mirror is our second commission of the festival - see In Movements for the first.
Funded by Creative Scotland National Lottery Open Fund for Organisations and PRS Foundation.
