Some films defy everything you’ve ever seen before and take you on a trip that is both joyous and unexplainable. Viy is one of those films.
A Soviet-era gothic fantasy film based on a Nikolai Gogol story, it centres on Khoma Brut, a seminary student who is forced to spend three nights praying over the corpse of a young woman. She turns out to be a witch.
Full of supernatural encounters, which culminates in an epic confrontation with the demonic sorceress, this is a wild ride, with some of the greatest special effects you’ll ever see (check out the trailer below).
Though the film alone is exceptional, we’re going the extra mile for Flatpack 2025. UK multi-instrumentalist Rusty Sheriff will be weaving a tapestry of chilling soundscapes, using everything from found sounds and hacked electronics to reimagine the film's sonic landscape with a new live re-score.
