Bodies of Water

Sunday 4th February, 2007

The Electric Cinema Screen 2 | 18:30

Bodies of Water is an evening of experimental cinema and live music presented by six-piece collective Photon Hex.

The films in tonight's programme are threaded together by a concern with water, the body and alchemy, from Man Ray’s uncanny

L’Etoile de Mer (France 1928) to the frenetic collage of Wallace Berman’s (USA 1956 to 1966) and the crazy handpainted animations of Harry Smith’s series (USA 1946-57).

The Photon Hex musicians – Simon Mabbott and Nicholas Bullen (Black Galaxy), Hilary Jeffrey and John Richards (Sand / Kreepa) and solo artists Helena Gough and John Pickering (Haxan) - will combine composed and improvised approaches, analogue and electronic sounds from a range of instrumentation (including laptops, electronics, double bass, trombone, guitars, percussion and amplified objects) in order to spark off new and striking dialogues with the work onscreen, interspersed with regular aquatic DJ interludes.

The live performances are complemented by showings of 2 films which focus on transmutation and include soundtracks as an integral element:

Takahiko Iimura’s Iro (Colours) (Japan 1962-3) and (USA 1954) by Stan Brakhage.

This event is supported by the PRS FOUNDATION. With thanks to Lux.
