Girl + Coming Out
GIRL
COMING OUT
Pop quiz: when was the first lesbian kiss on British TV? If your answer was Brookside then you wouldn’t be alone, but in fact the milestone came 20 years earlier with a powerful half-hour drama called Girl (1974, 30 mins). Written by James Robson and produced at BBC Pebble Mill as part of their Second City Firsts strand (highlighted at Flatpack 2016), the film features Alison Steadman as a disgraced private leaving the military for fraternising with a superior officer. The first gay kiss took another five years: Coming Out (1979, 69 mins) is a moving, funny Play For Today featuring Nigel Havers and Anton Rodgers as a writer leading a double life. Both are presented here in a rare double-bill in partnership with SHOUT Festival.
