Film for all the senses

Kyle

Saturday 3rd February, 2007

The Electric Cinema Screen 2 | 16:00

We begin in a barely-furnished flat, where a teenage boy seems to be living alone. We follow him to the markets, where he finds work helping out on a fruit-stall. Meanwhile, a young mother is pleading for extra hours at her job. Gradually over the course of the film we build up a picture of these two people, their pasts and their hopes and what might connect them. Kyle is the debut feature by John Bradburn, a Redditch-born filmmaker who studied in Wales and currently teaches film in Staffordshire. He made the film with a small crew over one summer in Birmingham, shooting on DV with mainly non-professional actors in the Bull Ring markets and at the three estates in Kings Norton. The result is a bold and engaging piece of work with an acknowledged debt to the likes of Herzog and the Dardennes but a sensibility all of its own.

Dir: John Bradburn UK 2006, 91 mins With: Alise O’Neill, Aaron Grey, Hugh Blackwood, Sarah Maloney
