Unogumbe
Isango Ensemble is an award-winning theatre company that draws many of its artists from the townships around Cape Town. This new short film, screening for the first time in the UK, is a compelling document of their take on Noyes' Fludde by Benjamin Britten (also seen performed in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom). Relocating the story of Noah’s Ark to present-day South Africa, and re-imagining Noah as a woman who must hold her family together, Unogumbe is beautifully sung in Xhosa and performed with traditional African instruments.
Tickets £5/£3 – receive £5 off Solomon And Marion tickets when booking (see below) This one-off screening is presented in partnership with Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Afrovibes. See also: Come Back, Africa.
Solomon and Marion is a powerful two-hander starring Janet Suzman and Khayalethu Anthony, set in the run-up to the South African World Cup in 2010. It runs at the REP from 16 October to 1 November.
