My Grandmother + Live Score
It’s amazing this one-of-a-kind silent masterpiece remains under the cultural radar.
Full of comedy and cinematic innovation, it follows the story of a spectacularly lazy bureaucrat who, after getting the boot, goes on a desperate hunt for a grandmother - slang for a well-placed benefactor to slide him back into the system.
With Harold Lloyd-esque flourishes, the film is a playground of experimentation, cramming stop-motion, hand-drawn animation, and puppetry into a world of distorted lenses and expressionist décor. It’s a dizzying, lo-fi masterclass in visual anarchy that refuses to sit still.
We are thrilled to present this digital restoration with a brand new live score by the formidable duo of Stephen Horne and Meg Morley.
LATE ADDITION TO THE PROGRAMME: Ensemble Bednieri Birmingham's own Georgian choir will be singing a few songs before the film.
With thanks to the Georgian National Film Centre.
